Several Overwatch Twitter accounts have uploaded a new video, revealing that the game will add at least 3 new maps as part of its Anniversary celebration event – and they may be hinting at a new mode, too.
The maps appear to be set in new areas of the existing Eichenwalde, Temple of Anubis and Dorado maps. Watch the video below:
The use of “Arena maps” is interesting, as it’s not a term that’s been widely used before. It may be that these are maps designed for the game’s 1v1 and 3v3 modes – since its release last year, those modes have only featured one map, Ecopoint: Antarctica.
A blogpost did once refer to Ecopoint as an Arena map, but a datamine last year appeared to point to Arena being an entirely new, still unseen mode.
A datamine last week also suggested a new mode centred around destroying an objective for the first time in Overwatch – it’s not clear if the two are related.
The Overwatch first anniversary event will begin on May 23 – we know that it will come alongside a new Game of the Year edition, plus new items in standard loot boxes and very probably a legendary Symmetra skin.
