Microsoft already debuted a new Halo game to open its Xbox show, but we didn’t make it through the day without new stuff from its second most popular franchise, Gears of War.
While like Halo, it also seems like it may be time for Gears to move in some new direction, it’s doing so in an unexpected way.
Microsoft did in fact debut Gears of War 5 with a lengthy cinematic, gameplay reveal trailer, which very much looks like a traditional Gears of War experience. Marcus Fenix and his son are back, along with other characters I…can’t quite remember the name of.
But that’s not all. Microsoft also showed off Gears of War: Tactics, which appears to be an RTS set in the universe, which could contain some XCOM-type elements, but I’m not positive. But weirdest of all, we saw Gears of War Pop! as in…yes, Pop! figurines. It seems like it’s something that’s going to be a LEGO competitor, if this becomes a regular thing, but perhaps a bit of an odd pick for one of the goriest M-rated series ever.
Gears of Wars lives on and expands in new ways in the coming months and years, and I’m curious to see where Microsoft takes it in these new installments. I’m hoping for continued evolution in Gears 5 itself, and I wasn’t all that enamored with Gears 4, which was a bit “more of the same” for me to the point where it failed to stand out. But we’ll see. More to come. Watch the trailer below:
