Pokémon GO Fest is entering its second day in Chicago, and while I’m not there this year, it looks like a much better time than last year. The action is no longer contained to a tiny walled-off section of the park, there are no hours-long lines in the beating hot sun and, crucially, the app seems to be working. I’m glad I was there last year to witness what felt like a truly remarkable misfire, but I’m a bit disappointed to miss what seems like some genuinely fun Pokémonning this year. Like last year, attendees are getting a crack at a special prize as well: Gen 2 mythic Pokémon Celebi is available in the park right now, with a global release following after.
People started catching Celebi after what seemed like a pretty brief and park-specific special research questline yesterday. One step included catching 10 Unknown and so you can be pretty sure that Niantic won’t be forcing players outside of special events to complete that one: every Unknown I’ve ever caught was at GO Fest last year, and I’ve never even seen one in the normal world. We’re in the second day of GO Fest right now, and so the second round of players are getting their first chance at the new creature. The exclusivity won’t last all that long, however: Celebi will be seeing a global release at some point, and likely soon. We don’t yet have an official date.
Last year, attendees at Pokémon GO Fest were theoretically going to get the first crack at Lugia, the game’s first legendary raid that debuted at the event. After technical difficulties derailed the grand reveal Niantic just released the thing globally in one fell swoop, even if attendees did get the impressive bonus of a guaranteed catch, something that anyone who’s spent time trying to catch a legendary can appreciate.
Will Celebi arrive as quickly as Lugia did? Likely not. But I’d expect it to see it this month at the very least, if not starting next week. Pokémon GO is still going full blast during this summer tour, and at this point it seems like there’s some new development to write about at least every week. We’ll let you know what the Celebi questline is as soon as it goes live.
