Spider-Man is a lot more fun to play than I thought it would be and it showcases some of the best visuals of this console generation. It also excels in game design. Except when it doesn’t. Spider-Man’s suit is a good example of both ends of the game-design spectrum.

Good game design

You begin Spider-Man with four suits in your inventory. Additional suits unlock as you progress through the game, and you have to purchase these suits before you can use them. The suits are bought with tokens gathered from completing in-game activities like stopping local crime, photographing landmarks around Manhattan, and completing projects at Research Stations. Some developers and publishers would have used microtransactions to force players to pay for Spider-Man’s suits. Insomniac Games and Sony deserve praise for not following this path.
